The Official Scope Creep Episode Guide

Curated by your hosts, Liz Talago and Jamie Cox

In late 2022, my friend Liz Talago and I set out to create a business podcast that we wanted to listen to. And I know this is the story of how most podcasts begin, but this is really how it happened.

Liz and I met as organizers for Nashville’s chapter of Ladies Get Paid and felt an immediate connection. If I remember correctly, I met her the day she quit her corporate job and set out on this wild ride that is entrepreneurship.

Since then, we’ve been in constant contact—we’ve worked together via my agency Strange Salt, we’ve shared articles on imposter syndrome, and we’ve rolled our eyes at LinkedIn bros blowing up the comments section of our hot takes. One day, in we were having the same conversation we’d had many times—swapping all the bogus advice from self-proclaimed business gurus we’d seen around the internet that day, and it finally clicked—what if we recorded this conversation?

And in March of 2023, Scope Creep was born.

Scope Creep is a podcast for anyone who’s ready to ditch the corporate hellscape and build a values-first brand. We created the show for solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, and small business owners who are ready to build a business that’s good for their minds, bodies, and bank accounts. In each episode, we share how they’ve built successful businesses on our own terms—no manifestation or vision boards required.

Since we launched in early 2023, Scope Creep has become a brand of its own—one loved (and hated) by many. I’ll never forget the feeling of screenshotting our podcast next to the faces of Carol Burnett and Julia Louis-Dreyfus to show Liz that we had made it on Apple’s New & Noteworthy. I believe my exact text message to her was “!!!!!!!!”

Starting and running a podcast is a lot of work (a story we’ve all heard but refuse to believe) and I’ll share all my learnings on that soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to share The Official Scope Creep Episode Guide1, curated by me, Jamie Cox, and my co-host Liz Talago.

1. Bad Business Advice & Girlboss Red Flags

This is our most-listened-to episode. It happened to coincide with our New & Noteworthy debut. We got a lot of fans (and haters) for this one and I’ve never felt so proud.

About the Episode

In the years before this podcast existed, we spent many a happy hour venting about all the #girlbossess shilling bad business advice on the internet. So the time has finally come for an unfiltered takedown of all those flimsy masterminds, group coaching programs, and courses you’ve probably seen for sale on Instagram.

Listen For

Tons of hot takes about the state of the internet, plus a fun experiment with ChatGPT.

2. How to Have Hard Conversations without Losing Clients

About the Episode

We LOVE our clients…mostly. And other times, they’re a big pain in the ass. In this episode, we share our top client management challenges and how we’ve faced them. We’re talking shiny object syndrome, an unholy attachment to bad ideas, and you guessed it—scope creep!

Listen For

Tips on bringing your clients back to Earth…or at least back into orbit.

3. Listener Questions and Client Horror Stories

About the Episode

This is my favorite episode of Scope Creep so far because it made me realize what an impact the show has made on others. Real talk: when Liz and I first thought about this episode, we thought we’d have to make questions up to make it look like we had listeners (we would never, but we did joke about it). But ALAS! Y’all pulled through and showed us that we weren’t just screaming into the void. In this episode, we answer YOUR questions.

Listen For

The TEA. 🫖 Our listeners delivered some juicy stories and complex questions.

4. Why are We Like This?

About the Episode

Despite being fourth on this list, this was the first episode of Scope Creep! Before starting the show, Liz and I constantly asked each other “Why are we like this?” In our planning conversations, we came to reckon with the fact that not everyone has such a skeptical worldview (good for you!) or a constant urge to question authority. So, we wanted to explore the things in our histories that made us this way.

Listen For

More information on our not-so-glamorous upbringings and the events and experiences that made us think about work differently.

5. How to Ask for Reviews and Testimonials

About the Episode

This is our first-ever mini-episode and in it, we discuss the delicate art of asking for client reviews—even if a project didn’t end the way we’d hoped!

Listen For

Some real talk about reviews and testimonials and why it’s hard to get them.

6. Building Boundaries

About the Episode

As a small business owner, solopreneur, or even a corporate ‘stan,’ you probably know how important, but difficult, it is to set boundaries at work. But can you start saying “hell no” without drying up your business or damaging your client relationships?

The answer? Hell yes.

In this episode, we share our “Hell No Manifestos” that guide what we will and won’t do for money.

Listen For

Some vulnerability and real conversation around landing “dream” clients and a dramatic reading of our first piece of hate male mail.

7. So You’ve Been Ghosted

About the Episode

In this mini-episode, we share a listener's story about being ghosted and discuss the cringiest technique for getting them to respond.

Listen For

About the Episode

Regardless of how long you’ve been in the industry, some feelings of self-doubt are bound to creep in! In this mini-episode, we share our tried and true techniques for giving our precious little egos a boost.

Listen For

Hard and fast advice for keeping feelings of self-doubt at bay.

Until next time, stay creepy!
